I finally picked up the highly coveted USA Gold Indian Head Half Eagle coin. I added this beautiful, brilliant uncirculated example to my collection and it completes the type set along with the Quarter Eagle I featured a few weeks back.
Coin collecting is a great hobby and I view each and every one of these coins as historical artifacts of a bygone age. I think it’s pretty cool that gold and silver circulated as money back in those days.
Just imagine the world 1915. World War One had reached a stalemate in Europe and settled into 4 years of terrible trench warfare on the Western Front. In America, Ford Model T’s were rolling off the factory lines and the economy was benefitting from growing electrification. USA Gold Indian Head Half Eagle Coin
The Half Eagle coin has a five dollar face value, whereas the quarter eagle is $2.50. Gold Indian Head Half Eagles contain 0.2419 oz of gold, while the Quarter Eagles contain 0.12094 ounces. Here are some more details on the coin:
- Obverse: Displays a masculine image of a Native American wearing a full headdress encircled by 13 stars with the word “Liberty” above and the date below.
- Reverse: Features a majestic bald eagle. Surrounding the eagle is “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, “In God We Trust” and the denomination “Five Dollars.”
- Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt and minted from 1908-1929.
These are magnificent coins that are highly sought after so I fully expect them to hold their value over time. Not only will they increase in value due to their numismatic value to collectors, but their gold content should hold value too.
