Looking to invest in Silver? Here are the Top 10 Silver Bullion Coins that people stack. These are the very best Silver bullion coins in the world. They are the purest and most liquid Silver bullion coins on the market.
While spot silver is pretty cheap today, physical silver is quite expensive with premiums over spot as much as 20%. That’s the actual price difference between the “paper” silver that trades in the futures market and the real, in-your-hand, physical silver that you can go out and buy.
Silver bullion coins are certainly one of the most popular forms of owning physical Silver. So here is my list of the top 10 Gold Silver Coins.
Many of these coins can be purchased from my favorite source: Silver Gold Bull – Your Trusted Bullion Dealer because they price match and offer fast, safe and secure shipping.
So here is my list of the best silver bullion coins for stackers and investors.
#1 Canadian Silver Maple Leaf
The Royal Canadian Mint Silver Maple Leaf (SML) has been produced since 1988 and is a highly sought after silver bullion investment coin. Each coin has a $5 dollar face value, weighs 31.11 grams and is 1 troy ounce of 0.9999 fine silver. These coins are recognized worldwide by investors and bullion dealers.
What I really like about these coins are that since 2018, they have special security features. These new security features include: radial lines, a micro-engraved maple leaf and BULLION DNA™ anti-counterfeiting technology.
The RCM is always innovating and from 2018 on, all silver Canadian maple leaf coins include the all-new MINTSHIELD™ surface protection: the world’s first proven approach to reducing the occurrence of white spots discolorations on silver bullion coins.
I really hate milk spots on my silver so I’m glad the RCM took action to stop it from happening.
Some of the SML’s have become collector items due to the addition of special privy marks (ie. RCMP logo) as seen in the pic below:
#2 American Silver Eagle
The American Silver Eagle is another investor favorite when it comes to silver bullion investments. These coins have been produced since 1986 and are guaranteed by the US Government to contain at least 1 troy ounce of 0.999 fine silver. Each coin has a $1 dollar face value and weighs 31.103 grams.
#3 Silver Britannia
The silver Britannia coin has been produced by the Royal Mint since 1997. The coin patterns feature various depictions of Britannia, a feminine personification of the United Kingdom.
Each coin has a face value of 2 pounds and contains 1 troy ounce of silver 0.999. The coins weigh 31.21 grams.
#4 Silver Australian Kangaroo
Australia has produced the silver Kangaroo bullion coin since 1993. These coins are actually legal tender in Australia.
Each coin has a face value of $1 dollar and contains 1 troy ounce of 0.9999 fine silver.
The coins also contain a security feature in the form of a micro-engraved letter to make counterfeiting more difficult.
Australia also produces silver Kookaburas and Koalas but these coins sell for a premium.
#5 Silver Chinese Panda
Chinese silver Panda bullion coins are another favorite among bullion investors and collectors. These coins have been produced since 1983.
The front of the coin (obverse) features the iconic Giant Panda. The reverse features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This is the largest structure within the greater Temple of Heaven complex.
The 1 ounce coins are less common than the 30 gram coins. Each coin weighs 30 grams and contain 0.999 silver. They have a face value of 10 Yuan.
These in-demand coins are highly collectible and sell for a premium above other silver bullion coins.
#6 Mexico Silver Libertad
The Mexican silver Libertad is another iconic bullion coin sought after by collectors due to its limited mintage in any given year.
The Libertads were the first silver bullion coins produced when they appeared in 1982. Each coin contains 1 tory ounce of 0.999 fine silver
The front of the coin (obverse) features the Coat of arms of Mexico is shown with a Mexican golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus devouring a rattlesnake.
The back of the coin (reverse) features The winged Victoria of Angel of Independence is in front with the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl in the background.
#7 Austrian Silver Philharmonic
Another popular silver bullion coin is the Austrian Silver Philharmonic. The coin first appeared in 2008 and has the same design as the popular Gold Philharmonic.
Each coin weighs 31.103 grams and has a face value of 1.50 Euro. The coins contain 1 troy ounce of 0.999 fine silver.
The reverse side of the coin features a variety of orchestra instruments while the obverse features a pipe organ.
#8 South African Silver Krugerrand
In 2017, South Africa began producing the silver Krugerrand to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Gold Krugerrand. The coin features the same design as the more recognized gold Krugerrand.
The reverse design features the Springbok antelope, while the obverse features the portrait of Paul Kruger, South Africa’s first elected president.
Each coins contains 1 troy ounce of 0.999 fine silver and has a face value of 1 Rand.
#9 Generic Silver Rounds
A lot of private mints produce Generic Silver Rounds. These typically have some pretty cool images on them like the American Buffalo pictured above.
Generic silver typically sells at a discount to the silver bullion coins produced by national mints like the US Mint or Royal Canadian Mint.
But these coins have become popular among the stacking community and collectors.
The coins contain 1 troy ounce of 0.999 or 0.9999 fine silver.
#10 Pre 1968 Canada and Pre 1964 USA Silver Circulation Coins
Often referred to as “Junk Silver,” pre 1968 Canadian dollars, 50 cents, quarters and dimes contain 80% Silver. Pre 1964 USA halves, quarters and dimes contain 90% silver.
These coins have both numismatic value in the low mintage years as well as the value of the precious metal (silver).
These coins often appear discolored or dirty because silver tarnishes over time. In coin parlance, collectors refer to this as “toning.”
So if you come across some old coins that look like that don’t throw them away!
Protecting Silver Bullion Coins
All of these coins can be handled but the coin collector in me demands that I keep my coins in pristine condition. This also helps their resale value.
So I buy coin capsules and coin tubes to keep my silver bullion coins in the best possible condition.
Check out Amazon for some Coin Capsules.
